Former Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo tested positive for COVID-19, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday.
New York placed Rizzo on the IL.
Boone told reporters in New York Rizzo is experiencing light symptoms.
Rizzo, whom the Cubs traded to the Yankees at the deadline, became the highest-profile player in baseball to publicly acknowledge he was unvaccinated in June. He said at the time he was "taking some more time to see the data."
The week he was traded, NBC Sports Chicago asked him if he had found enough information to reconsider his position, and he declined comment on it.
“I said what I said and moved on, and that’s it,” Rizzo said.
Assuming Rizzo is not vaccinated, he's subject to a quarantine period of at least 10 days. That would take him out of next weekend's series against the White Sox on the South Side.
Rizzo has been one of the Yankees' top hitters since the trade. In nine games, he's batting .281/.400/.563 with three home runs.
He became the first Yankee ever to tally an RBI in each of his first six games with the team.
