Cubs evaluating Bryant's status for Mets finale

Cubs’ Kris Bryant was hit by a pitch in the 1st inning vs the Mets and left the game soon after due to difficultly gripping the bat. After the game, David Ross gave an update on Kris Bryant’s condition.

Third baseman Kris Bryant was feeling better Wednesday, Cubs manager David Ross said, but didn't start against the Mets due to a bruised right thumb.

Bryant exited Tuesday's game after getting hit in the hand by a Taijuan Walker sinker in the first inning. He stayed in defensively in the bottom half of the inning before exiting, later undergoing x-rays that came back negative.

Whether Bryant returns to the lineup Thursday could depend on how the injury responds to the pregame activities the 29-year-old was scheduled for on Wednesday.

"Just feels like the spot where he got hit has kind of a bruise feeling," Ross said. "He’ll test it out swinging the bat here a little bit in the cage.

"[He's] day to day I would say."

Bryant is in the midst of a resurgent, All-Star caliber season for the Cubs, holding a .292/.374/.544 slash line with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs in 62 games.
