Adbert Alzolay was placed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday due to a blister issue. Before the Cubs took on the Padres on Tuesday, David Ross talked about Alzolay and how getting a short rest could be beneficial.

The Cubs bullpen gained a reinforcement on Tuesday in swingman Alec Mills, activated from the 10-day injured list.

In a corresponding move, rookie right-hander Cory Abbott was optioned to Triple-A.

The Cubs have leaned heavily on their bullpen in the last week following several short outings from the rotation, part of the calculus in calling up Abbott, a starter who can pitch multiple innings, from Iowa this past Saturday.

Adbert Alzolay exited Monday's start following three-plus innings after struggling with a blister on his right middle finger. He landed on the IL Tuesday.

Zach Davies (4 1/3 innings), Jake Arrieta (2) and Kohl Stewart (3 2/3) each had short outings last week against the Giants.

Mills, who hit the IL May 16 with a low back strain, has pitched more than one inning in eight of 12 appearances this season. The right-hander spent 2020 in the starting rotation, throwing a no-hitter against the Brewers.

Mills has a 5.96 ERA in 12 appearances (22 2/3 innings) this season. Six of the 15 earned runs he's allowed this season came across two of his last three outings before going on the IL.
