Cubs place closer Craig Kimbrel on 10-day injured list with elbow inflammation

Just when the Cubs appeared to be getting back to full strength, they hit another bump in the road.

Ahead of Thursday's game against the Brewers, Theo Epstein announced that the Cubs placed closer Craig Kimbrel on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to Monday, meaning Kimbrel can return to the Cubs a week from Thursday against the Padres.

This marks the second trip to the IL this season for Kimbrel, whom the Cubs signed to a three-year, $43 million contract in June. He missed about two weeks in August due to right knee inflammation.

Kimbrel holds a 5.68 ERA in 21 games this season, though he's converted 13-of-15 save opportunities. However, he's walked the tight rope in a number of outings and holds a 1.53 WHIP this season.

This is a developing story. More to come...
