Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 57th homer in 1998

Share

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa's early-September tear continued as he took a young Jason Schmidt deep in Pittsburgh for his 57th dinger.

The two-out blast gave the Cubs an early lead in a game they eventually won 5-2 thanks to some late heroics. Sosa was in the middle of it all - singling and scoring in the fourth inning and then reaching on an error in the ninth inning as the Cubs touched up Jason Christiansen (remember him??) for 3 runs.

Fun fact: Gary Gaetti had 3 hits in the game just a few weeks after being acquired by the Cubs following his release from the St. Louis Cardinals. The big game pushed Gaetti's line with the Cubs to .362/.446/.638 (1.085 OPS) in 15 games.
