Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 61st and 62nd homers in 1998

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

Sosa was only a few days behind McGwire in the race to 62 - McGwire hit his against the Cubs on Sept. 8 while Sosa used a multi-homer game to reach 62 on Sept. 12, 1998.

McGwire didn't hit his 63rd homer until Sept. 15, opening up a lead on Sosa he never lost.

Sosa's two bombs off Brewers pitching were each measured at a ridiculous 480 feet, but it was Mark Grace's 10th inning shot that walked the game off for the Cubs in a crazy 11-10 win.

However, Sosa's second blast made it a one-run game in the bottom of the ninth to help get the Cubs to extra innings in the first place.

Fun fact: At one point, the Cubs had an 8-3 lead, but gave up 7 runs from the sixth-to-ninth innings, forcing the Cubs to pull off an epic comeback beginning in the bottom of the ninth and extending to Grace's walk-off in the 10th.
