MLB The Show sim: White Sox at Rockies

NBC Sports Chicago is simulating the 2020 White Sox season via MLB The Show during the postponement of play. The White Sox, stocked with young talent and veteran offseason acquisitions, were expected to take a big step forward in their rebuild this season. Follow along as we play out the first few months of the season.

Result: Rockies def. White Sox 8-3

Record: 12-19, 4th in A.L. Central (6.0 GB of Twins)

W: Kyle Freeland (2-3)

L: Lucas Giolito (1-5)

Game Summary: Early in this affair between the White Sox and Rockies, it seemed like we were getting last year’s version of Lucas Giolito. The first six outs recorded by the White Sox ace were of the swing-and-a-miss variety. But, as has often been the case for Chicago’s pitching staff this season, the starter collapsed in a major way.

This time it was an unlikely culprit that dealt the first blow to Giolito. While the White Sox righty was making the rest of the Rockies lineup look ridiculous, Kyle Freeland, Colorado’s pitcher, hit a two-run double off the right-field wall to give his team the early lead.

Two innings later, Giolito worked himself into a bases-loaded jam. Freeland once again found himself involved in the offense, reaching on a bunt single. However, the knockout punch was delivered by Daniel Murphy, who hit a grand slam that all but ended this game in the 4th and definitively ended Giolito’s outing with him trailing 6-0.

Freeland was a two-way star in this one. The White Sox failed to get a runner past second base against the Rockies’ starter until he was pulled with one out and a runner on, in the 9th. A single run ended up being attributed to Freeland, as Jose Abreu made the final score look a bit more forgivable with a 3-run homer off Wade Davis in the 9th.

But the White Sox lost this one to the Rockies 8-3 and split the two-game series in Colorado.
