It might seem unrealistic, but the sub-.500 White Sox are still in the wild-card chase.
How much longer they stay in it, though, is a mystery.
The White Sox are just 4 1/2 games back of the American League's second wild-card spot, but the up-and-down play that's hurt them all season long doesn't seem to be showing any signs of going away. A seven-game win streak was followed by losses in five of their next six games. Then came a sweep of the Angels, but then they dropped a series this weekend to the Cubs.
Heading out west to play the Angels and Mariners this week, the White Sox will need to shake off the up-and-down nature of their season if they want to make a late push at a playoff spot.

"Kind of the thing we've learned about this team all year is you don't know what's going to come," CSNChicago.com White Sox Insider Dan Hayes said. "Here they are, they played the Angels well earlier in the week, they swept them. The Cubs series has not gone the way they thought it would. It's just up, down, up, down all season long. And it's been this way. July was great right before the end of the month there, right before the trade deadline they go on that seven-game winning streak. Since then they've been up and down just like they were before. So really you expect them to turn it up for a couple days, and then they fall back right in the same pattern.
"They've played like a .500 team all year. Obviously right now they're a little bit below that. It's just kind of gone that way all the way."
