NBA Power Rankings: Opening week has share of inexplicable results

Opening week in the NBA provided more than the usual share of outstanding individual performances and inexplicable results.

Kyrie Irving exploded for 50 points in his Brooklyn debut, but the Nets wound up losing in overtime to a mediocre Minnesota team. The Clippers looked like world beaters in routing the Lakers and Warriors, only to somehow lose a road game to the lowly Suns.

NBA fans were told all summer to anticipate the most wide-open championship race we’ve seen in over a decade, and if the season’s first week is any indication, that’s exactly what we’ll get.

While the new super duos in Los Angeles look to build chemistry and consistency, several teams in the Western Conference could challenge for the top seed. And, in the East, even though Philadelphia and Milwaukee look to be a cut above the rest, the race for playoff seeding will be fascinating to watch, with young up and coming teams like the Hawks and Bulls hoping to challenge for one of the final spots.

Here’s our first edition of NBA power rankings. The only guarantee is there will be plenty of movement throughout the season.
