Bears dip into NCAA ranks to find new running backs coach

Legendary Detroit running back Barry Sanders joined the Under Center podcast to discuss why he still believes leaning on the running game can bring a team close to a title, and points to last year’s 49ers as evidence.

Matt Nagy continues to fill out his 2021 coaching staff. On Thursday morning, the team announced they’d hired Michael Pitre to act as their new running backs coach.

Prior to joining the Bears, Pitre worked as Oregon State’s running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure there, from 2018-2020, the Beavers averaged 165.8 rushing yards a game, and scored a total of 59 touchdowns. In addition, he helped Jermar Jefferson win AP’s Pac-12 Co-Offensive Player of the Year award in 2020.

Pitre is also familiar with current Bears running back Artavis Pierce. In 2019, Pierce led the Beavers with 873 yards on 146 carries, good for a 6.0 YPC average.

The move fills the void that was left when Charles London joined Arthur Smith’s staff with the Atlanta Falcons.
