David Montgomery nominated for FedEx Ground Player of the Week

Bears rookie running back David Montgomery enjoyed his much-anticipated breakout game in Week 8's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He rumbled for 135 yards and one touchdown (on 27 carries) in an effort that revived a dead-on-arrival rushing attack.

As a result, Montgomery has been nominated for Week 8's FedEx Ground Player of the Week.

Other candidates include San Francisco's Tevin Coleman and Pittsburgh's James Conner.

Montgomery's career-day was overshadowed by the Bears' 17-16 season-threatening loss and the questionable play call by coach Matt Nagy to take a knee with 43 seconds left in the game. The end result was a missed 41-yard field goal by kicker Eddy Pineiro which naturally sparked questions about why Nagy didn't try to make his kick easier by running another play or two.

Still, Montgomery's performance ended what was a stretch of brutal games for Chicago's running game, culminating with Week 7's bizarre game plan that included just seven rushing attempts. Nagy promised a stronger commitment to the run entering Week 8 and he delivered.

Unfortunately, it still didn't result in a win. Now at 3-4, the Bears' Super Bowl hopes are nearly as dead as the running game was two weeks ago.
