Eddy Pineiro dubbed Bears' hidden gem

Remember when the Chicago Bears didn't have a kicker? When the summer months were spent focusing on the bizarre and sometimes excruciating kicker competition?

Yeah, I do too.

But here we are, embarking on Week 4 of the regular season, and Eddy Pineiro has done more than just win the aforementioned kicker contest; he's won a regular-season game for the Bears. His 53-yard strike as time expired against the Denver Broncos in Week 2 cemented his status as Chicago's kicker in 2019, and after his gutty performance Monday night against the Redskins, he's looking more and more like the long-term answer, too.

Pineiro's received a few accolades this season as well. He was the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after the Broncos win and even donned the Snickers chain as the hungriest player in the league. Now, he's been dubbed as Chicago's hidden gem.

Kicking has gone from a weakness to a strength for the Bears with the previously unknown Pineiro on board. He has made all five of his point-after tries and has made five of six field-goal attempts. He's also made both attempts outside of 50 yards this season.

Wins and losses are often determined by a kicker doing his job well. The Bears have experienced both sides of that equation: Cody Parkey's painful miss that cost Chicago last year's wild-card game and Pineiro's game-winner against Denver occurred with just one regular-season game in between.

Pineiro is battling through a pinched nerve that impacted his ability to perform kickoffs in Week 3, but he should be good to go once again this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
