It looks like the Bears' Week 1 kicker will be Cairo Santos after all.
On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced that they've placed kicker Eddie Piñeiro on injured reserve:
Piñeiro's still working through a groin injury that kept him from kicking at all during training camp. Because teams can now take players off IR after only three weeks, the earliest Piñeiro could return would be the Bears' Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
So in comes Santos, who the team signed back on August 25th. The six-year vet has a career field goal percentage a hair above 80%, but struggled in 2019, going 4-9 with the Tennessee Titans before getting released. Though he's currently on the Bears' practice squad, once the team calls him onto the active roster, they'll only be able to put him back on the practice squad once more without subjecting him to waivers.
