Numbers suggest Week 2 vs. Seahawks is must-win game for Bears

If the Bears want to make a surprise run to the playoffs in 2018, they may have to treat Monday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks as a must-win, even just two weeks into the season.

While the game could have wildcard implications sometime down the line, the ramifications go much deeper when it comes to wins at the start of the season.

As pointed out by Justis Mosqueda of Optimum Scouting, teams that begin the year 0-2 have rarely made the postseason in recent years.

Since 2009, 77 teams have lost their first two games of the season, and only six reached the playoffs that year. So if the Bears lose again on Monday, they would have just an 8.5 percent chance at a potential wildcard spot, based on the last nine years of data.

This also puts the Seahawks in the same boat, as the two teams are competing to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start.

Chicago started 0-2 in all three years under John Fox. Prior to 2015, their last season with two straight losses to begin the year was 2003.

The playoffs might be out of reach for Matt Nagy’s Bears as is, but if they want to make a postseason run, they almost have to win in Week 2 against Seattle.
