Report: Bears to sign DT Larry Ogunjobi

New Bears GM Ryan Poles has reportedly made his first free agent addition, and it’s a big one. According to multiple reports, the Bears are set to sign defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Pretty much ever since the team hired Matt Eberflus to be the next head coach, the need for a disruptive defensive tackle in the middle of the line has been a talking point around Chicago. Now the team has that man in Ogunjobi, who will turn 28 this summer.

Ogunjobi signed a one-year deal with Cincinnati in 2021, and was a force on the Bengals' stout defensive line. He started 16 games last season and generated seven sacks from the interior. But he hurt his foot in the Bengals’ Wild Card win over the Raiders and missed the rest of the postseason. That injury didn’t affect Ogunjobi’s value too much however, as it’s been widely reported that he signed a three-year, $40.5 million deal to come to Chicago.

The new Bears DT was initially drafted by the Browns in the third round of the 2017 draft. He notched 14.5 sacks and 180 tackles in four years in Cleveland.

The signing of Ogunjobi has ramifications for other Bears free agents, as well. For one, it almost certainly rules out the team re-signing Akiem Hicks, and likely rules out Bilal Nichols, too. Each of those men will want starting opportunities in the NFL, and the addition of Ogunjobi would relegate them to rotational roles.
