5 Takeaways: Blackhawks have another bad start, but get another big point

The Blackhawks lost 2-1 in overtime to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. Here are five takeaways:

Lehner has bounce-back game

Blackhawks goalie Robin Lehner made his first start since Jan. 21, when he and the Hawks lost 3-4 to Coach Q's Florida Panthers right before the All-Star break. Corey Crawford started the first two games after the break.

Lehner made 38 saves on 40 shots including a Torey Krug breakaway in overtime.

"You win some and you lose some," Lehner said following the game. "I think I I won nine games before that. We're going to lose a game. It didn’t stick with me. I think it’s a little bit over two weeks ago that I played. To kind of get back in was nice."

Another bad start

The rest of the Blackhawks were lucky to exit the first period tied 0-0 with the Bruins. Boston outshot Chicago 16-5 in the opening frame. They only had three shots on net until 29 seconds remained in the first. The Hawks have been outshot 28-9 in the first period the past two nights.

The game had a more exciting finish at least. Drake Caggiula appeared to score late in the third period to put the Hawks ahead 2-1, but the officials determined the play was dead due to a hand pass from Olli Maatta. It appeared to be the incorrect call as the puck seemed to hit Maatta's stick after being redirected by his glove.

Charlie McAvoy scored 1:19 into overtime to hand Boston their fifth straight win. Gaining a point, the Blackhawks are now two shy of a playoff spot. Tuesday night the Hawks picked up a point, losing 3-2 in overtime to the Wild

Dach gaining confidence

Blackhawks rookie center Kirby Dach, 19, has been playing with a lot more confidence lately. The 6'4 forward has an assist in five straight games and six points (one goal, five assists) in a five-game point streak.

Dach made several noticeable plays against the Bruins in which he utilized his size and skill. The most notable one led to a power-play goal for the Hawks. Dach stood tall and camped out in front of the Bruins' net, receiving a pass from Patrick Kane, but couldn't jam it in despite a solid effort. The puck found DeBrincat, who put the Blackhawks up 1-0 at 6:50 of the second period.

"He's using his speed but he's stronger and stronger on the puck, winning those battles," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said of Dach. "He stripped whoever it was there and walked in on a breakaway and had a great chance. When he's just staying in that puck area, having that strong stick, he's making things happen and it's really good to see. The stronger he gets, the more and more he's going to create for us."

DeBrincat claws out of slump

DeBrincat hadn't had a goal in his past five games, but he was able to shake the slump and find the back of the net on the previously mentioned Blackhawks power play Wednesday. It was his 13th goal of the season.

Boqvist injured

Rookie defenseman Adam Boqvist left the game in the second period after being boarded and suffering a right shoulder injury. It's the same shoulder he injured against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 23. Following the game, Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said he didn't think it was very serious.
