Four takeaways: Blackhawks rally twice but fall to Kings in overtime

LOS ANGELES — Here are four takeaways from the Blackhawks' 4-3 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Saturday:

1. Blackhawks overcome a pair of deficits but lose in overtime

The Blackhawks trailed 2-0 and were getting outshot 10-0 at one point in the game. But unlike they were able to do against Nashville on Tuesday, the Blackhawks pushed back and scored two goals of their own in the opening frame.

The Kings eventually broke the 2-2 with 7:23 left in regulation, but the Blackhawks responded yet again with 1:39 left in regulation when Jonathan Toews rifled a shot past Kings netminder Jack Campbell to force overtime.

But it was the Kings who prevailed in extra time when Drew Doughty scored with 16.6 left to hand the Blackhawks their sixth loss (1-4-2) in seven games.

"Bottom line is we still didn't play well enough to win that game," Jonathan Toews. "So not going to talk about falling short in overtime."

2. Corey Crawford injury scare

After giving up two goals in the first five minutes of the game, the Blackhawks made a goaltender switch, but it wasn't because of performance. An on-ice official appeared to signal for a concussion spotter on Crawford, who exited after the Kings scored their second goal.

Crawford was hit in the mask at the 17:28 mark, which came off a shot from Matt Roy 61-feet away. Given his history with head injuries, Crawford was removed from the game but later returned and was sensational. He finished with a season-high 40 saves on 44 shots for a save percentage of .909, and at one point stopped 30 in a row.

"I think the ref just thought I was dazed or something," Crawford said. "It was his call, so whatever. I was able to go back in."

Robin Lehner was in goal for 5:18 of action and stopped all five shots he faced before Crawford re-entered the game.

3. Blackhawks dominated in possession game again

The Kings came into Saturday's matchup as the No. 1-ranked team when it comes to scoring chances generated per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (30.6), according to Natural Stat Trick. The Blackhawks have given up the second-most scoring chances (29.2).

The Kings controlled the pace of play in this game, leading in shot attempts (79-47), shots on goal (49-27), 5-on-5 scoring chances (31-20) and 5-on-5 high-danger chances (15-6).

"I think there's situations where we have momentum and we just find ways to let it go," Toews said. "Whether it's just letting teams forecheck on our D-men, not being available for our D-man, not finding ways to get pucks out of the zone where we can get possession or get some rushes or at least find ways to get numbers down where we're dumping the puck in their zone. If we get it out of our zone, they just turn it right back, fire it right back in.

"We're spending all our time in our own zone, so it gets tiring. Our goalies are getting peppered, eventually pucks are going to go in. They're doing a great job of trying to keep us in these games. But whenever we seem to get something, we let it go and take penalties and it's just frustrating. Nothing seems to be consistent right now."

4. Adam Boqvist's NHL debut

The Blackhawks unexpectedly called up Boqvist on Thursday, and they didn't exactly ease him into his NHL debut. He skated on the top pairing with Duncan Keith and quarterbacked the second power-play unit, which scored in the first period to end a 0-for-21 drought.

Boqvist also logged three shifts in overtime, with the coaching staff showing confidence in him that he could handle it in his first game. He finished with one shot on goal, three hits, one giveaway and one blocked shot in 15:38 of ice time.

"He was good," head coach Jeremy Colliton said. "Of course, we're trying to be a bit careful on the road, not starting him in D zone. But I thought he was very good, made a lot of plays. He was one of the guys stuck out there for that long shift. I thought they survived it well. I thought he performed well."
