NHL sets free agency date and time

After scoring 41 goals in his sophomore season, Alex DeBrincat struggled to put the puck in the net consistently in his third NHL season. He says it’s a learning experience and he plans to continue to improve his shot in the offseason.

On Friday, the NHL announced that free agency will begin on October 9 at 11 a.m. CT.

The free agent market usually opens at 11 a.m. CT on July 1, but was pushed back this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The salary cap for the league will remain flat at $81.5 million — where it was for the 2019-20 season — putting teams like the Blackhawks, who have several pending free agents to consider re-signing, in a bind.
