Former Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster is on Team Canada's World Baseball Classic roster

Ryan Dempster hasn't thrown a pitch in a Major League Baseball game since the 2013 World Series.

But that's not stopping him from suiting up for this year's World Baseball Classic.

Dempster, a native of British Columbia, was named to Team Canada's roster for the upcoming edition of the event. When he takes the hill for his home country, he'll be more than three and a half years removed from his last major league outing.

Dempster, who will turn 40 in May, spent 16 years in the big leagues, pitching for the Marlins, Reds, Cubs, Rangers and Red Sox.

He spent nine years with the Cubs, winning 67 games, saving 87 games, posting a 3.74 ERA and striking out 1,070 batters in 374 appearances.

Dempster made the All-Star team in 2008 and won a World Series title with the Red Sox in 2013.

Dempster won't be the only pitcher on the squad long removed from his playing career, though. Eric Gagne, who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2003, is on Team Canada. He hasn't pitched since 2008.
