Ross enjoyed Martinez' base-throwing rant

Cubs manager David Ross had at least one takeaway from the rant Dave Martinez, his Nationals counterpart, went on while arguing a call in Wednesday's game.

"I'm glad he got the base up. If he wouldn't been able to get the base out of the ground, that would have been a little embarrassing," Ross said.

Martinez, the former Cubs bench coach, got ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Chris Conroy Wednesday night. Conroy ruled Washington's Trea Turner went out of the baseline after reaching first base safely on a dropped third strike.

To voice his displeasure, Martinez, who said postgame the call was "awful," removed first base from the ground and threw it.

"That was pretty good," Ross said, laughing.

Ross said he's unsure whether he would have been able to get the base out of the ground as Martinez did, joking about sending it to the Nationals manager.

"Probably one of the better ones I've seen from an opposing manager, that's for sure. That was good."
