5 Takeaways: Zack Smith scores two first-period goals, Corey Crawford stays sharp in Montreal

Zack Smith scored two goals in the first period, Patrick Kane got another point closer to 1,000 and Corey Crawford had another great outing in his hometown in the Blackhawks' 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Here are five takeaways:

Two for Smith

Smith scored two first-periods goals against the Canadiens. The forward only had two goals in his first 40 games with Chicago this season before Wednesday.

Drake Caggiula stole the puck from Montreal goalie Charles Lindgren, who was trying to play it behind the net. Caggiula then passed it to Smith in front to make it 1-0 Hawks at 5:42 of the first period.

Smith got his second goal of the period at 8:32, when he tipped in Slater Koekkoek's shot from the blue line.

Kane 1K Watch

Kane recorded his 998th career NHL point in Montreal, passing the puck to Alex DeBrincat for a power-play goal from the high slot at 11:27 of the second period to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

Home Crow cookin'

Crawford continued his stellar goaltending in his hometown. He saved 32 of 33 shots on Wednesday. Crawford entered the game with a .971 save percentage in Montreal and recorded a .970 save percentage in his latest outing there. The goalie also had a 48-save shutout in Montreal last year. He improved to 6-0-2 in his native land.

Good start to road trip

So far the Blackhawks have grabbed all four points out of their first two games on the Eastern Canada trip. Chicago has also won three straight games.

They beat the Senators 3-2 in overtime in Ottawa on Tuesday and face the Maple Leafs (25-16-6) in Toronto on Saturday to close out the trip.

Drake doing it

After assisting on the first goal of the game, Caggiula scored on a breakaway after picking a defenseman's pocket at 11:40 of the third period to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead. He's been more and more active in each of the four games he's played since missing 27 with a concussion.
