Summer of Sammy: Sosa's 63rd homer in 1998

Share

It's the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Sammy, when Sosa and Mark McGwire went toe-to-toe in one of the most exciting seasons in American sports history chasing after Roger Maris' home run record. All year, we're going to go homer-by-homer on Sosa's 66 longballs, with highlights and info about each. Enjoy.

After catching McGwire on homer No. 62, Sosa again caught the Cardinals slugger on dinger No. 63, homering off San Diego's Brian Boehringer on Sept. 16.

Slammin' Sammy did it in style, too, with a game-winning grand slam in the top of the eighth. He drove in all six runs in the Cubs' 6-3 victory, with a two-run double in the seventh and then the grand slam in the eighth.

McGwire started pulling away after this, homering on Sept. 18, 20, 25, 26 (twice) and 27 (twice).

Sosa, meanwhile, homered in only two games after Sept. 16 and not until the 23rd (in which he hit two off Brewers pitching).

Fun fact: The big game put Sosa's 1998 season stat line at 63 homers and 154 RBI in only 149 games with a 1.041 OPS.
